Following the success of the IPU Girl Night and motivated by a Bikini Kill flyer/call to action that stated “Girl Gangs Must Rule All Towns,” Riot Grrrl’s Olympia chapter began hosting regular meetings. Accounts vary, but meetings were reported to have happened in the laundry room of the Martin Apartments, the Ray Apartments, and the Evergreen CAB building. The first meeting is said to have been unofficially hosted by Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile, with about 17 people in attendance. Discussion flowed freely around themes of body autonomy, sexual harassment and assault, self-defense, gender, music, zines, and feminism. One week later, the group hosted a show with Heavens to Betsy and the Spinanes. The show was $2 for girls and boys who showed up in women’s clothing, or $3 for boys who chose not to wear women’s clothing. At the time, the cover charge discrepancy was a controversial statement that generated a great deal of discussion in the male-dominated music scene.
